Medical devices encompass a wide range of medical technology products and procedures that save lives, heal, help and improve people’s quality of life. High regulatory requirements are therefore an integral aspect in the development and approval of medical devices – including their packaging.
Faller Packaging supports MedFact – a medical technology manufacturer with longstanding expertise – in the development and safe packaging of sterile medical equipment. We have been working closely together for several years – having successfully implemented projects for medical packaging already. One project that we submitted to the ECMA Award 2022 was awarded a prize.
A company with great flexibility and expertise, MedFact Engineering GmbH has specialised in the development and manufacture of medical devices and interventional systems since 2008. With its broad experience and resources, it offers services in the fields of cardiology, electrophysiology, neurology and gastroenterology – bringing all this to fruition on a global scale.
Medical technology manufacturer MedFact was faced with the challenge of developing high-quality and safe packaging for its medical devices.
- High quality standards: The packaging needed to meet the strict regulatory requirements of the medical industry – so as to ensure the safety and performance of the products while maintaining sterility and cleanliness in the operating theatre.
- Functionality: The packaging had to offer special functions to ensure that the medical devices remained protected during transport and safe during storage. The way the packaging is handled in the operating theatre also played an important role when it came to usability needs.
- Environmental friendliness: MedFact has been working long towards its goal of finding more sustainable packaging solutions to reduce its environmental footprint.
MedFact chose to work with Faller Packaging. After scrutinising MedFact’s requirements down to every last detail, our team of packaging experts accompanied the customer in regular coordination meetings and developed a packaging solution tailored perfectly to its needs. With this special design, our developers not only convinced MedFact – but also the jury of the European Carton Excellence Awards (ECMA) 2022 in the category “General Packaging, Virgin Fibre”.
Our development process involved:
- Requirements analysis: We held extensive discussions with the MedFact team to understand their requirements and objectives. We considered factors such as device protection, choice of material, sterility, ease of use, transport stability and regulatory requirements.
- Concept development: Based on the requirements, we drew up various packaging concepts. We presented these to the MedFact team and discussed the pros and cons of each option.
- Design and prototyping: After selecting the best concept, we created detailed designs and developed prototypes of the packaging. These were then used for initial usability evaluations and to test transport stability.
- Optimisation and validation: Based on the test results, we optimised the design and carried out further tests to ensure that the packaging meets the necessary standards and requirements.
