The production and distribution of medicines are subject to strict controls, and the packaging must also have legal security features. These are essential for protection against first opening and contribute to security against counterfeiting.
Counterfeiting in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry not only causes considerable financial losses, but also poses a serious risk to patient health, especially in the case of prescription and certain over-the-counter (OTC) medicines.
Reliable packaging solutions are of great importance in the pharmaceutical industry. They protect the health of patients and ensure the integrity of the products. Faller Packaging offers state-of-the-art anti-counterfeiting solutions in accordance with EU Directive 2011/62/EU. Our broad portfolio of anti-counterfeiting technologies aims to effectively prevent counterfeiting and fulfil all regulatory requirements.
Safety features required by law
Tamper-evident protection
More safety for patients. Our solutions ensure that any tampering with the packaging is avoided or clearly recognisable.
Serialisation
Authentication in the pharmacy. Thanks to state-of-the-art production technologies, Faller Packaging is ideally equipped to print all serialisation codes on folding cartons and labels.
Advanced security features
Additional security features for brand protection
These include guilloche patterns, Iriodin® pigments, Optical Variable Ink (OVI), and other specialised techniques that offer both visible and concealed protective elements.
Security labels
Tailor-made protection functions with customisable codes and security features
Secure with digital printing
High-resolution labels with variable microtexts and personalised codes
Tamper-evident seal with an adhesive label
Here a label is applied over the tuck-in flap.
The label can have an extra-strong adhesive so that it cannot be removed without leaving traces. Void labels, which are intentionally designed to leave a pattern when removed, are another means of giving visible proof of tampering.
Semi-clear paper tamper evident label with first-opening protection
The environmentally friendly semi-clear Faller paper tamper evident label with tamper evident closure offers a first-opening guarantee for folding cartons in accordance with European Directive 2011/62/EU.
By attaching the label over the tuck-in flap of the folding carton, it prevents tampering with the product as the first opening is clearly visible.
The use of paper labels on folding cartons creates a sustainable mono-material solution for efficient recycling cycles.

To ensure the integrity of pharmaceutical products such as medicines, many countries are implementing strict serialisation regulations. Since 2019, EU Delegated Regulation 2016/161 has stipulated that pharmaceutical manufacturers must equip their products with security features that make each pack uniquely identifiable and verifiable.
In Europe, the serialisation of pharmaceutical products involves the use of a 2D data matrix code on the packaging, which carries important information:
- the product code to identify the medication
- the serial number
- the national reimbursement number or another national identification number
- the batch number
- the expiry date
Faller Packaging therefore offers serialisation services for folding cartons and labels, an attractive solution for smaller batches in particular, where serialisation on the packaging line is not economically viable.
International markets such as China with the 128C bar code ("China code"), Russia with crypto codes and the USA with the Drug Quality and Security Act (DQSA) have similar regulations, whereby the required codes often contain more extensive data than European 2D data matrix codes and therefore require more complex printing processes.
Thanks to the most advanced manufacturing technologies, Faller Packaging is excellently equipped to print all types of serialisation codes on folding cartons. Our many years of experience and broad knowledge of materials also provide a solid basis for supporting pharmaceutical manufacturers in meeting international serialisation standards.
In addition to the security features prescribed by the EU, such as the first-opening guarantee and the 2D data matrix code for identifying and authenticating your products, Faller Packaging offers a wide range of additional security features. These include both overt (visible) and covert (not immediately recognisable) features that further enhance your product protection against counterfeiting.
Unconcealed security features offer immediate visual verification, which is possible without special aids. They are complex to produce and therefore difficult to imitate. These features include special security colours and hologram labels, all of which are designed to ensure the identity of your products.
Concealed security features require specialised equipment for detection, thereby increasing the level of security. These features, which take into account specific confidentiality rules and are often only accessible to authorised persons, include solutions such as microtext and cryptoglyph. These techniques enhance protection by going beyond detection by conventional methods.
With this comprehensive range of security features, Faller Packaging can offer customised solutions that are precisely tailored to our customers' needs and ensure robust protection against counterfeiting.
Security labels
Its modular design means that you can choose security elements that are optimally tailored to your needs. Say no to the unchecked duplication of your products.
We can offer you personalisation in a wide range of code types such as Code 39, Data Matrix or even QR codes, which where required assume other tasks such as linking to one of your servers.
Our label lets you increase your security level in the example illustrated to include possibilities such as diffraction film. Straightforward copying will automatically render your codes illegible. The open elements of the security foil are an immediately recognisable additional counterfeiter protection measure for customers. The combination of visible and invisible features such as personalisation is best known from bank-note printing and, in the same way, it reduces the risk to you significantly.
In addition to the range of security materials that you are free to choose from, additional colours such as OVI (optical variable ink) may also be used. Furthermore, our labels come with variable microtext of the highest quality.
Labels with Invisible Ink
Our new security labels with Invisible Ink offer your products great protection against counterfeiting. Your advantages at a glance:
- Invisible to the human eye: Only visible under UV light, ideal for quick and reliable checks.
- Versatile application: Perfect for labelling on all common primary and secondary packaging materials.
- High security through combination: Various security features such as invisible text, variable data, codes and symbols make counterfeiting virtually impossible.
- Lean costs - fast realisation: Our smart processes make it easy to implement multiple security features.
